ZONING
- Definitions
Zoning is the practical division of a space so that different
areas of that space can be provided with cooling or heating individually and uniquely.
- Frequent in Commercial
Most larger facilities benefit from zoning.
They have several thermostats or
temperature sensors controlling each zone individually. Each zone may be cooled or heated
by its own HVAC system or several zones may share one HVAC system.
It may also rely on VAV or chiller units fed by a cooling tower.
There are many different combinations and Fix My AC. Inc. will be happy to check your

- Rare in Residential
Newer homes are often provided with two heating and cooling systems. Therefore
these homes have two zones.
However what most people understand by residential zoning is one Heating and Cooling system
cooling or heating differentially two or more zones withing the home.
In very few cases, have we seen it work. In most cases, the user forgets to turn off
the zone he/she has just left. Sooner or later, all zones are on, set at the same temperature
and at the same times.
- Alternatives to zoning in residential cases
If you have a home office and stay most of the day in one room of the home while no-one else
is present during the day, then you may want to consider the addition of a minisplit
system in your office rather than installing a zoning system.
The main reason is because the main system must work at a minimal level which is most
likely above the needs of your office. So the best way to save money in energy consumption
is by installing a system whose size will match your needs.
